Dear Parents and Students:  

Thank you to everyone who completed the STAR360 Tests this week!  We appreciate your responsible participation, and look forward to discussing scores with you!

A few of you still need to complete these tests.  We are extending the deadline to complete them until 2/5.  We have opened the courses up so you can work this weekend, but beginning Monday morning, your courses will be blocked until tests are complete. Early College Students, please read email sent out earlier on Friday. Please note:

• You can either take these tests from home, or you can come in to take them at school during open labs. 
• Your classes will be remain "on hold" until you complete both your math and reading tests.

Note:  Remember that there is no right or wrong score on this test but i’s important that you do your very best on these tests, so that we can help you succeed. Any student that disregards the importance of this test will need to meet with the principal, retake the tests, and effectively jeopardizes their enrollment at MEWA.

Please check your email for your UN/PW now, and access the STAR360 Student Directions to begin (Monitor Password: ADMIN).

CAL Blood Drive

The CAL HOSA team, which stands for Health Occupations Students of America, are participating April, in the State Leadership Conference, where they compete against other students in competitive events, such as CPR, first aid, medical terminology, medical spelling, speaking, the HOSA bowl, sports medicine, plus many others. In order to cover the costs of this competition, along with the costs to send a few students to the National Leadership Conference, CAL will be doing some fundraising. Next Tuesday and Wednesday (February 2nd and 3rd), they will be holding a blood drive over at CAL as a way to earn some cash to cover expenses. If you're interested in supporting our HOSA team, in addition to saving lives, please email Savanah (lehman8@mewebacademy.org) and she will get you more information, along with signing you up.

Future's/Job Fair January 27th, 2015

Resume Building 12:00-2:00 -------------- Mock Interviews 2:00-4:00

Metro East Web Academy will hold a special event on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 12:00 PM. The first seventy-five 11th and 12th grade students to sign up, will have an opportunity to participate in a resume building workshop or mock interviews with local community organizations and businesses. Community organizations and businesses will hold mock interviews with students and share information about future employment, volunteer, internship, or other similar opportunities in which students can be better prepared for their future careers.

It's time to take the Star360 Winter Tests!  Video Explanation

• Remember, you can either take these tests from home, or you can come in to take them at school during open labs.  
• Our winter testing dates will occur during Week 4 in your Mentor Seminar class, beginning 1/25. 
• Beginning 1/25, your classes will be placed "on hold" so that you can complete your tests without distractions. Your classes will be made available as soon as you complete both your math and reading tests.
• On 1/25, you will need to check your email for your username and password, and then follow the instructions on the STAR360 Student Directions. 
• You will begin with the 30 minutes math test. When you are finished with it, you will immediately log back in and complete the 30 minute reading test.  
• Remember that there is no right or wrong score on this test.  This is just being used to identify your current abilities, strengths, and areas for improvement. No matter what your current score is, the goal here is just to improve each time you take STAR360!

Note:  It’s important that you do your very best on these tests.  Any student that disregards the importance of this test will need to meet with the principal, retake the tests, and effectively jeopardizes their enrollment at MEWA.

Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to invite your high school students to our free virtual college fair for the Western United States!  This fair is scheduled for January 25th-30th.  The students can log on any time during this week to get information from many colleges.  There is a question and answer section for the students to get answers directly from college reps.  If you would like to offer your students extra credit for participating in this free college fair I can provide you a list of students from your school that registered and participated in the virtual fair, just e-mail me at tpendleton@collegefairsonline.com and let me know if you want a list.  The students must go to www.collegefairsonline.com to the students tab to register ASAP and we will send them a reminder e-mail.  This service is completely free and we would love to have your school and students join.   Please have your students register as soon as possible and choose the West fair when registering if they would like to participate.  If you would like to hand out flyers you can download them at the bottom of the student page on our website.  Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything.

January 22, 2016 – NATIONAL BLONDE BROWNIE DAY

This unofficial national holiday recognizes blonde brownies, frequently referred to as blondies.
Blonde brownies are similar to the traditional brownies known to all.  In place of cocoa, brown sugar is used, giving it a sweet tooth-satisfying molasses flavor!

Most people like to add white chocolate or chocolate chips to their blonde brownies or other things like nuts, toffee or butterscotch. Blonde brownies are usually prepared unfrosted as the brown sugar flavor tends to be sweet enough.  These blondies are sometimes served in sundaes, often topped with caramel sauce.

HISTORY

There is no found documentation of the beginning of national blonde brownie day.  It is known however, that this light-colored treat was actually invented in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Recipes for blonde brownies can be found in recipe books dating back into the 1940s and maybe even earlier.

• Chess Club with Mr. Ling begins Thursday and every Thursday in the Science/Art room from 11:30-12:30.

Come play chess, join in a little friendly competition, improve your skills, and have fun!!!

FYI... playing chess just might improve your math and problem solving skills too!!!  

 Capitol Day

On April 16, 2015, over 250 virtual school students and parents joined us in Salem to show their enthusiastic support for virtual public education. They rallied on the front steps of the Capitol, and walked the halls of the State Legislature to talk to their representatives about the importance of keeping virtual education as an option for Oregon families. Several key legislators were on hand to accept the Golden Apple Award. This award is presented to lawmakers who have supported efforts to expand access to virtual public schools.

Virtual Schools Capitol Day 2016

Are you looking for an opportunity to teach your children about state government and demonstrate your support for virtual public education.  Then join us in Salem for Virtual Public Schools Capitol Day on Wednesday, February 24, 2016.

Every year, our families travel to the State Capitol in Salem to express their support for virtual public schools.  It's an opportunity to thank our legislative champions , show our support for virtual public schools and talk to legislators about protecting this education option.

We’re honored this year to be joined by Tillie Elvrum, the President of PublicSchoolOptions.org, a national coalition devoted to protecting education options for families. She will be sharing her story about becoming an active parent in support of public school options and what the coalition is doing around the country.

• COSA Scholarships

Each year COSA sponsors or assists in processing ten $1,000 college scholarships.  These scholarships are for Oregon high school seniors attending 2 or 4 year Oregon colleges.  The applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2016.  Results will be announced by May 1, 2016.

• OASSA Scholarships

Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year to graduating seniors from Oregon public high schools.  The scholarships may be used for a 2- or 4-year university, trade, or professional/technical school.  These two scholarships are for a son, daughter, or dependent child of an OASSA member who meet the criteria listed on the application.  The applications must be postmarked by March 28, 2016. Results will be announced by May 1, 2016.

Capitol Day

On April 16, 2015, over 250 virtual school students and parents joined us in Salem to show their enthusiastic support for virtual public education. They rallied on the front steps of the Capitol, and walked the halls of the State Legislature to talk to their representatives about the importance of keeping virtual education as an option for Oregon families. National Strawberry Ice Cream Day – January 15

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM DAY

National Strawberry Ice Cream Day is a food holiday observed each year on January 15.  
( National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on July 1)

Strawberry ice cream is made by blending either strawberries or strawberry flavoring with eggs, cream, vanilla and sugar.  Food coloring is often used to give it the pink or light red hue.

Dating back to at least 1813, strawberry ice cream was served at the second inauguration of James Madison.

Strawberry ice cream is one of the three flavors in Neapolitan ice cream along with vanilla and chocolate.

Strawberry cheesecake ice cream and strawberry ripple ice cream are variations of this feature.

• Dual Credit Classes: Juniors and seniors can take dual credit classes through MEWA and earn both high school credit and college credit at the same time! Sign up for BA 218 and earn credit for economics, sign up for WR 121 or WR 122 and you can earn English credit, sign up for Art 116 or Art  271 and earn fine arts credits! Other possibilities are available as well - please talk to your counselor about these possibilities when you sign up for courses next trimester.
