Social Media & The Student

At MEWA, we are a community active on social media.  Our school utilizes Facebook daily to keep our students, staff, and parents informed of what’s happening.  We also post about education news, show off student work and achievements, and help everyone get to know our staff a little better.  MEWA is not just a school, but a family, or team, in which each individual contributes something important and creates a winning combination.  On Twitter, we send out tweets with important information on everything from blog posts, to eating healthy and study tips.  Our Pinterest profile visually shows what the MEWA experience is about, as well as offers tips on how to organize your online “classroom” and what to expect when it comes to higher education.  Finally, our blog is where we tell you all about, well, everything that has to do with MEWA.  Here, you can read the updates from Principal Gray in his messages and get tips on how to be successful as a member of the MEWA team.  Social media is meant to inform, to be shared, and to build a community around a common interest.

In the latest Principal's Message, Dr. Gray outlined some bullet points with concepts that student’s should be aware of as they begin to use social media more and more.  The author of this particular article that Dr. Gray quoted, mentioned the shift being made in the “real world” when it comes to finding employment.  As our students begin to achieve their academic goals and build a career path, there are some things to consider now, in Junior High & High School, when it comes to social media.
  1. Social Networking has become more prominent in everyday life, while email use has declined.  Part of this comes from our need to have immediate answers; we no longer like to wait for someone to login, check, and respond to an email.  With social media, tweeting, Facebook chat sessions, and Google hangouts have become the quickest form of communication when answers are needed fast.
  2. Job searching has become much more complicated, in the sense that networking lunches and LinkedIn have become more popular.  Now Human Resource departments check to make sure a job candidate is active of social media before bringing them in for an interview.  People want to see how much of an influencer you are, or where you are most creative.  Social media is sometimes the best way to gauge what you are most interested in.
  3. LinkedIn has become the number one network in which employers and employees can both actively and passively participate in the job search and hiring process.  You can now even turn your LinkedIn profile into a resume, without using Word or another program like it!
  4. Social media is about showing, and focusing on, your passions.  Be honest, but remember, what you write within the digital space, really does stay there!  Ask yourself this question before writing a status update, tweeting, sending a Snapchat, or posting an image on Instagram: “What will my employer 3, 5, and 10 years from now think of this?” If you don’t like the answer, or the thought, it’s probably not something that needs to be shared with the world.

Social media is nothing to be afraid of.  Merely, it should be thought of as a tool that will help you build a strong future, no matter what you decide to do with it.  If you have questions about how to best use social media, ask your counselor for some tips.  Make sure you are following MEWA for even more tips and to stay updated on what’s happening!

What's your favorite social networking site to use?

Principal's Message

A Message from the Principal/CEO:

There is still time to complete the survey! It is our belief that for continuous improvement, we must engage our parent partners and seek feedback relative to our program and school.  Please take a few minutes to complete this survey.  We anticipate that the survey should take no longer than 15 minutes to answer all 26 multiple choice questions.  You will also have an opportunity to comment on any of the questions.  All responses are anonymous.  Thank you very much for your support and help.  Please select link below:

The end of the semester!  Students are working hard!

Our teachers are hanging in there!

I pulled the following from the http://edtechpower.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-message-to-parents-about-social.html. This is important information to digest as we more and more create a digital legacy. Please also click on the link to the "5 Reasons why your Online Presence will Replace your Resume in 10 Years" from Forbes Magazine below:

Digital Legacy
  • What goes online stays online.... forever. Even if you think it is private it really isn't. Anyone can take a screenshot of anything you write or post and share it with anyone. There is no digital privacy and we should all behave with that assumption at the back of our mind. It should make us "better people."
  • Take control of it, don’t let it control you. You have the ability to take control of your digital persona. The more you put online yourself, the more you drown out anything you might not want to be seen. Buy your own domain name, start a blog, get on Twitter and use all of these tools to create your best public self possible. This post, 5 Reasons why your Online Presence will Replace your Resume in 10 Years is an excellent example of how and why to do this.
Networking has benefits and drawbacks
  • Behavior changes according to context. Kids need to learn proper online etiquette for a variety of situations. This is a message we should be teaching kids at home and at school. You need to know your audience. There are things you can say with friends that you would never say in school. Students need to always keep this in mind, while also realizing that nothing is private online (see above).
  • Networks built young have great potential. Kids are building connections now that can serve them well into their professional lives.
  • Fail young. I believe it general it is helpful to let kids to "fail" in middle school when the stakes are lower. When you first get involved with a social network it can be addicting and wreak havoc on your time management. Usually this addiction passes after some time. It is better to get through those early heady days when the negative impact on your academics is less important.
Behavior is behavior
  • Parenting is parenting. Don't be afraid to parent when it comes to technology. Take the phone away, turn off the internet, keep the computer in a public room, limit time online. Trust your instincts.
  • Addiction is addiction. If you are concerned about your child's over-use of technology, address it before it gets out of control, just as you would any other addictive behavior.
  • Behavior is behavior. Kids know how to behave. They need to understand that their online behavior should follow the same rules as their offline behavior. The impact of bad behavior Online can have much greater repercussions!

Student Showcase

Our students here at MEWA possess incredible amounts of talent and we want to make sure they are recognized for it.  Each student has contributed in some way to the development and growth of our program.  Their drive, determination, and willingness to push creative boundaries inspire us to take a close look at our own motivations.

Some of our students have shown us their ability to write incredible pieces of poetry, essays, and stories.  Here is an original poem written by Madison Laurent for her creative writing class.

Other students use their creativity as an outlet outside of the classroom; Ashley Newman painted this original self-portrait on her own time, not for a specific class project.

Still others, exercise their favorite hobbies in other states and around the world.  Our MEWA student, Fiona Wylde , is extremely active in the competitive windsurfing & stand-up paddle boarding circuit.  MEWA is a perfect fit for her because she is able to easily stay caught up in her education while travelling to competitions and doing what she loves.

This just goes to show you, no matter what your hobbies, talents, or interests are, there is a place for everyone at MEWA.  Thank you to all our students for being our inspiration! We hope to continue to grow our MEWA family and support each individual’s talent.  Our students' work will be posted to our Facebook, Twitter, & Pinterest pages periodically.  We hope you will follow us through these channels to give our students the recognition they deserve!

Remember, keep the ME in MEWA.

Getting the Most from Your Online Education

As we begin the second half of our 2013-2014 academic year, it’s important to remember why we are here in the first place: to learn.  How do you get the most out of your learning experience at Metro East Web Academy?  Here are a couple tips for you to consider to help finish out the year strong.
  1. Visit our “Tips for Successful Online Learning” Web Page.  This page has a number of different tips on how to be successful as an online student.  Read them and see if there is anything you need to add to your approach as we begin the next term.
  2.  Meet with your teachers at least once per week.  Your teachers are here to help you succeed and they want to see you grow.  Make sure to talk with them if you are stuck on an assignment or lesson.  Often two heads are better than one and conversing with a teacher will help both of you understand each other better in the future.
  3. Keep notebooks, or computer folders, with notes for each class.  Taking notes is always a good idea and keeping these notes organized will save you time when studying for a test.  You can also use these notebooks for writing questions and answers as you go through your lessons.  Some classes require the use of a spiral notebook, but they are a handy tool for any class.
  4. Turn in your homework assignments on time.  The sooner you can get an assignment turned in, the quicker you can get feedback from the teacher on your work.  Doing the assignments early will also allow you more time to ask questions for clarification, if needed.
  5. Stop in the Drop-In Labs each week.  Coming in to the drop-in labs regularly will help organize your day, give you time to talk with teachers and counselors, and allow you to socialize with fellow classmates.  Collaboration produces some of the best creative results on projects and stopping by the drop-in labs will help feed your creative process.
  6. Visit our online social communities to connect & engage with other students & your teachers.  Our online social sites not only provide students and teachers with helpful tips and inspirations, but they are places for parents to collaborate as well.  We want to keep our MEWA community strong, both in and outside of, the school.  We hope all our students, teachers, and parents will contribute to our Facebook, Twitter, & Pinterest pages regularly to engage in meaningful conversations and stay up to date on what’s happening at MEWA.
