Parent Launch & Learning Coach Class

We have had a great turn-out of new parents attending Parent Launch Class. I want to thank those who have attended so far, we even saw a few returning parents who came for a refresher course.

If any returning parents would like to schedule a time to come in please let me know and we can arrange that ASAP. There have been many new updates and changes to the online system and we want all parents feeling confident in their ability to support their student/s. Also feel free to email, call, text, or stop by my office with any questions, feedback, or any other needs.

    Parent Corner Episodes

We will have new Parent Corner videos created and uploaded very soon, feel free to send me feedback or new ideas too. We truly want to create the episodes based on the feedback and the needs of MEWA parents and families. “What will help you support your student?”

It could be very simple, such as …

    What is the dashboard?
     or …
How do I find the Principals message on the website vs. the app?

    MEWA's Weekly Announcements

The Metro East Web Academy provides a technology-rich 21st century learning model that ensures student success in a rapidly evolving learning, work, and community environment.

Students in our College Now writing class working with Ms. Struyk-Bonn!

    Dear parents and students:

More Oregon students racking up college credits while still in high school

Important Request for all early college, GED, and 6th through 12th grade online parents!

As you know, our school does not serve lunch, so we did not pass out the free and reduced lunch application as we did last year.  We inadvertently left the Family Income Survey Form out of our registration packets this year.  Some of you did fill out this survey for a deposit waiver when checking out a computer.  If you have already filled one out, there is no need to fill out another.  If you haven't, please see the message below from the Oregon Department of Education and either download the form from the link provided below and send to us in the mail or drop it off at our office.  We will also have some available in the office and will send an email attachment as well. Remember, all information submitted on this form is kept confidential.

    From ODE:

Charter Schools Preparing to Welcome Students for the 2015-16 School Year,

If your charter school does not offer a lunch program, please use the Family Income Survey.

    ·
Remember, it is critical that you collect accurate data about the students your school is serving and communicate with your district about your data.

ODE is bringing this to the attention of charter schools, school districts, and ESDs because of inconsistencies in the data, particularly pertaining to economically disadvantaged students in the 2012-13 School and District Report Cards. It is important for all schools, including charter schools, to collect accurate data and for districts to provide an opportunity for the data to be validated by the charter schools for use in state reports. This data will be used by the state, the US Department of Education, media, and researchers.

It is the goal of the ODE to report accurate data related to all of Oregon’s schools and districts. To mitigate instances of inaccurate data from being reported and validated in the future, the ODE is encouraging charter schools, school districts, and ESDs to consider the following:

    1. Charter Schools should review their data collection systems, tools, and reports. If data are reported to school districts or ESDs, the charter school should review the process to coordinate and validate these transfers of data to ensure fidelity and the opportunity to participate in the validation.

    2. School District sponsors should review their charter school data collection system, tools, and reports. Whether data are being reported by the charter schools or data are being reported directly by the School District or ESD, there should be an opportunity for the charter school to validate or review data prior to submission to the state.

    3. School Districts, ESDs, and Charter Schools should ensure an appropriate charter school representative has at least read-only access to the appropriate data validations for reports representing charter school data.

Thank you in advance for your work to ensure accurate and complete data is submitted to ODE and that all schools have the opportunity to validate data submissions.

      MEWA's Weekly Announcements

The Metro East Web Academy provides a technology-rich 21st century learning model that ensures student success in a rapidly evolving learning, work, and community environment.

      Dear parents and students:

Our first week has been a tremendous success.

Over 130 students attended launch and orientation this week - so glad to see so many returning and new faces. Kids are already working hard in their classes and turning in work.

Last Spring, we graduated over 100 students.  Of those graduating, 21 were GED completers.  A few of these students have transitioned to our early college program to complete their high school diploma requirements and work towards their associates' degree.

With the success that we have had this last year and students moving on after graduation, we now have slots available in all of our programs: 6th through 12th grade, early college, and GED.  If you know of someone that would benefit from our unique style of education, please communicate to these potential students that applications are available on our website: www.mewebacademy.org.

      Announcements:
      • lab times have been solidified for GED students and students should check their email, or call Ms. Campbell if you have any questions concerning GED.

        MEWA's Weekly Announcements

The Metro East Web Academy provides a technology-rich 21st century learning model that ensures student success in a rapidly evolving learning, work, and community environment.

        Dear parents and students:

It is our pleasure to welcome new and returning students for the 2015-2016 school year.  Our middle school, high school, GED, and early college programs continue to grow and improve and it is through the hard work of our students that graduation rates and enrollments increase every year. Thank you for your hard work.

This year we have a few exciting changes that will be implemented; we believe that these changes will continue to support and encourage our students toward further success.
        1. Trimester system: The trimester schedule will allow students to possibly earn more credits throughout the school year. It will also allow us to clearly define holidays as well as areas of study in need of extra focus and attention.
          1. First Trimester: September 8th - December 17th
          2. Second Trimester: January 4th - March 17th
          3. Third Trimester: March 28th - June 16th
        1. New Staff: two new instructors will be joining us this year. David Kennedy will be joining the science team and John Ling will be joining the math, science, and health teams. Both Tonia Gebhart and Christina Struyk-Bonn will move into part-time administrative roles.
        2. The first two weeks of school, from September 8th through September 18th, new and returning students in our 6th through 12th grade program will be required to attend two face-to-face sessions on campus. During those time slots, we will discuss how to be successful here at MEWA and how to stay caught up in all classes. By now your counselors or our front office staff have scheduled you in a time slot.
        3. MEWA will continue to follow the expectation that each student will complete one assignment per course enrolled, each week.  This requirement must be met to continue enrollment in MEWA.
        4. We are also going to ask our parents to continue to support the assignment requirement for their student by acting as MEWA partner learning coaches.  The involvement will require parents to make a short data entry into our system each week.
        5. Communication continues to be a primary focus. Please download the MEWA app, check email messages, check phone calls and messages, and provide us with the most current contact information.
        6. All of our programs have open slots -- so if you know of someone who wants to attend our 6th through 12th grade online program, Early College, or GED, please pass on this news.
        7. Early College students -- MEWA will pay up to $1,350 for tuition and books each term. For students in need, MEWA will help out with the cost of books above the $1,350 limit. Here at MEWA, we want all students to be successful. If you are interested in the early college program, please contact Jeff Cochran at 503-258-4790.
Parking Lot Closure Announcement from the Property Managers of Our Building

On Tuesday September 8th and Wednesday September 9th, the parking lot to the east of our rear entrance will be seal-coated and striped.  One-half the parking lot will be closed on each of the two days starting at 7:00 AM.  The best scenario is for students and parents to utilize parking lots in neighboring shopping areas, on Civic Drive, or take public transportation.  We are sorry for this inconvenience.

        Change to Trimester Schedule

Metro East Web Academy is excited to announce that it will be moving to a trimester schedule during the 2015-2016 school year.

The trimester schedule will allow students to possibly earn more credits throughout the school year. This schedule will better align with the MHCC quarter schedule and will allow Early College students to take advantage of our College Now and other course offerings at MEWA!  It will also allow us to clearly define holidays as well as areas of study in need of extra focus and attention.

We are thrilled to offer this change and believe it will be a good fit for our MEWA students.

        • First Trimester: September 8-December 17
        • Second Trimester: January 4-March 17
        • Third Trimester: March 28th-June 16th
