Principal's Message

A Message from the Principal/CEO:

GET READY FOR MEWA DIGITAL DOMINATION! This game is a Scavenger Hunt to explore the online communities of MEWA. How do you play? Students— Click this link: Digital Domination to access the entry form.  Note: you will need to login with your MEWA username.  Fill in all of the blanks, questions, and responses by exploring our MEWA digital presence.  You will need to access our website (mewebacademy.org), our blog (gbwa-announcements.blogspot.com), our Facebook Page (facebook.com/MEWebAcademy), our Twitter profile (twitter.com/MEWebAcademy), and our Pinterest profile (pinterest.com/MEWebAcademy).  All responses must be received by 3/18 and will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate for the Family Fun Center!  The winner will be announced on 3/19 and the prize must be claimed by 3/21. Have fun and thanks for playing our Digital Domination game!

Daylight saving time 2014 will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, when most U.S. states will spring forward an hour. Time will fall back to standard time again on Sunday, November 2, when DST ends.

Please note that our Spring Break begins on March 24th.  In the Brain Honey student assignment calendar, there are assignments due during this week.  Please note that we cannot change this as explained below regarding our dynamic scheduling system.  So, our suggestion is that some of the assignments be completed prior to the break and some can be completed after the break to stay on pace.  Of course a student may choose to work during this period, but know that staff will be unavailable.  We have corrected the system relative to assignments showing due dates on weekends.  We are working with Brain Honey to resolve this issue for next school year.

Students building pinhole cameras in Ms. Powell's class!

. . . and having a good time!

Seniors: Now's the time to turn in your Senior pictures for the yearbook. Photos should be a head shot or upper body. Grab a friend to take your picture and have some fun. If sending from a smart phone, use the medium size (121kb) Send pictures to Kari Clayton at clayton2@mewebacademy.org

Please note that it is time for students to begin their state testing (OAKS) and show up for scheduled tests and time!  Attending and taking the test is required and very important as the school is evaluated on student results and attendance in the state report card.  Being present for the test is included in the contract that many parents and students signed during your welcome meeting.

HAVEN'T PASSED THE OAKS YET? Well, this one's for you. The math department is offering Work Samples (and Local Performance Based Assessments) every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. If you are a Senior (or Junior) and have struggled to pass the OAKS test, you will want to make one of these sessions. Passing the math OAKS OR two math Work Samples is one requirement for graduation. Seniors should especially heed this advice as they prepare for graduation. Contact Mr. Kitchens or Mrs. Riehl for further information, or click on "Work Sample Sign UP" below to go to the RSVP (sign up) form and sign up for a date:

Stay connected through Facebook and Twitter.  We share informative and valuable messages daily.
You may have noticed that you now have assignments due on weekends and school breaks. This is due to our dynamic scheduling system, which supports individual learning plans. Unfortunately, we cannot change these due dates to regular school dates on a grand scale. But remember that our due dates are guidelines, not necessarily strict requirements.  So, if you are completing assignments within a couple of days of these due dates, you are staying on track.  If you have assignments that are due on Saturday, aim to complete them on Friday. If you have assignments due on Sunday, plan to complete them on Monday.

One new feature of this dynamic scheduling is the ability to select your course end date. While you cannot choose to work later than the end of the school year (June 6th), if you are trying to complete the class early, this is a helpful tool. In your grade book (in your class), you'll see a calendar icon. If you click on it, you will be able to see the target end date that your teacher chose, and could opt to choose an earlier one for yourself.  (See the image below).

Help the volunteer club get the community garden started for the year! We will be working toward moving fill dirt and the raised bed to our new, bigger plot. The weather should be nice, so come out and help us beautify our new space. We will meet at the school at 1:30 pm to 3 pm on Wednesday, March 12.  Contact Ms Hathaway with any questions.

We now have a new and growing FAQ Page for MEWA students and parents. Here you will see questions, answers, and how-to videos related to a variety of common issues. From our home page, www.mewebacademy.org, find the Student/Parent FAQ on the center button bar.

Local Performance Based Assessments (formerly Work Samples) are offered every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. If you are a senior without a math class in need of passing the Essential Skill in Math in order to graduate then you will want to plan on attending one of these. Contact Mr. Kitchens or Mrs. Riehl for further information.

MEWA has formed a parent booster/advocacy group.  Participation in this group is open to all MEWA parents, grandparents, guardians, and staff members.  The focus of this group will be to organize and support activities that promote our school and provide enrichment and growth opportunities for students and staff.  The next meeting is March 19th at 5:00 PM at MEWA.  Snacks and refreshments are provided.  The agenda this month will focus on a discussion concerning our upcoming Open House and what do we desire the parent group to become.  We will have a drawing to give away a $25 Fred Mayer Gift Card to one lucky attendee.  Aletha Peyton won a $25 Safeway gift card at the February meeting.  Congratulations Aletha!
