Principal's Message

Our Mission:
The Metro East Web Academy provides a technology-rich 21st century learning model that ensures student success in a rapidly evolving learning, work, and community environment.

A Message from the Principal/CEO:

Dear Parent/Guardian and Student:

This week in our mentor seminar class each student created a Google Drawing that was their "Spark", images that represents them. Here is "My Spark" to share with you. Please share your own sparks on our Facebook page or on our app under Shark Cam. - Dr. Gray

Our 2nd Parent Group last night was a success and we look forward to many more over the coming months so if you missed don't worry there will be many more to come.

We were  all thoroughly impressed by two MEWA students
Markquise and Hunter who both gave speeches and answered many questions from parents. They discussed student strategies for success, way to advocate for themselves, and ways to be involved within our school and community such as Music Club, Chess Club, Running Club, and our Community Garden to name a few.

We also want to remind everyone about the upcoming Teddy Bear Parade tomorrow that MEWA staff, parents, and students will be walking in, all are welcome!

Here is the link for more info regarding the parade, details will also be emailed from MEWA today.

This year we are requiring parents to log in to our parent check-in link and record whether or not their student has met the minimum number of assignments (one assignment per course per week) for the week.

We want to remind you that this is a requirement for your student to be included in the MEWA program as explained during the welcome meeting with your counselor and in the agreement that all parents and students sign in that meeting.  This is for web academy students only.

We believe that it is crucial that parents partner with us as we work to make each student successful.  If you have questions, please give Nichole Steele a call at 503-258-4803 or 503-660-8413.  Please go to the following link and fill out the parent check-in by 4:30 pm each Monday: Parent Check-In Link  The link can also be accessed through our MEWA app!

Announcements:

Commas save lives.

Come learn about commas from 10-11 on Thursday, October 2nd. You will earn extra credit in your English class.

In October students have the opportunity to take the PSAT.  The PSAT is a multiple-choice test taken by about 3.4 million high school students every year and it includes math, critical reading and writing questions.  It's a great way to get ready for the SAT and ACT exams.  Either the SAT or ACT is required for admission into 4 year colleges and universities.
So, if you're a MEWA student and want to sign up for the PSAT here's what you do:
Where:  If you live in the Gresham HS boundary sign up at the Bookkeeper's office at Gresham HS.  If you live in any other high school boundary go to Sam Barlow HS and sign up at their Bookkeeper's office.
When:  Go sign up next week (September 29th-October 3rd).  The PSAT test will take place on Wednesday, October 15th in the morning.  Get specific information about the test date from the school you sign up at.
How Much?:  The cost of the test is $14, but the State of Oregon pays the cost for 10th graders.
If you have any questions please contact your MEWA school counselor.

Doyle Gates, a new student to MEWA recently found a program to help write math expressions on Google Docs. He dropped by MEWA to give a quick explanation with Mr. Ellsberg.

MAP Testing
Greetings students! As you know, Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) testing is required for all students, but this is very good because it is a wonderful learning tool. MAP helps you and your teacher identify your strength areas and those areas in which you may struggle.  Watch this quick video to learn more about MAPS!  Beginning, 9/1, all students will take the following tests:
1.  Reading 6+ MAP
2.  Language MAP
3.  Math 6+ MAP

To RSVP for your Reading & Language and Math MAP test sessions, go to the following link:
