MEWA Weekly Announcements and Principal's Message

The Metro East Web Academy provides a technology-rich 21st century learning model that ensures student success in a rapidly evolving learning, work, and community environment.

Dear Parents and Students:

This information can be found at Character.Org.

Students themselves want schools to do more to prevent cheating and promote academic integrity.
“I just think that if teachers made sure students understood the topic they wouldn’t feel the need to cheat, because everyone gets excited when they do well by themselves. And if that happens and if teachers really don’t want you to cheat, they should watch you more carefully.” – Student
“Cheating needs to definitely be taken more seriously in my school, I only have one teacher that checks desks before tests for notes that may be written there and that needs to change.” – Student
Here are several key recommendations that can be implemented in schools to promote academic integrity:
  • Clarify the teachers’ and schools’ commitment to core values that include integrity;
  • Teach for mastery learning and not just grades;
  • Pay greater attention when administering tests;
  • Have classroom-wide and school-wide discussions on the social impact of the presence or lack of integrity.
  • Develop honor codes and include students in this process.
These recommendations and more are described nicely in this two-page handout created by Jason M. Stephens and David B. Wangaard at the School for Ethical Education: Teaching for Integrity: Steps to Prevent Cheating in Your Classroom
David Wangaard, director of the School for Ethical Education, says that some simple steps can lead to increased academic integrity.

MEWA's Academic Integrity Policy in Student Handbook!

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Plagiarism and Cheating Policy:  MEWA students are expected to do their own work and cite the work of others as appropriate. Plagiarism is the willful presentation of someone else’s previously written, published, or copyrighted material as one’s own. Such material may include work that appears in print, online, or in audio or video formats. Copying work from another student may also be regarded as plagiarism if done without consent and if a citation is not given to the original writer. Penalties for plagiarism are listed below. MEWA will choose, at its discretion, to employ plagiarism-detecting software.  Cheating is considered as bad as plagiarism and carries the same penalties.

    • PENALTIES/CONSEQUENCES for PLAGIARISM and CHEATING:
      • 1st Offense – Zero for the assignment.
      • 2nd offense – Loss of credit for the course.
      • Third offense requires the computer to be returned to the school and a suspension from school pending expulsion.
      • A student is, in addition, subject to consequences for violation of ANY policy or law through the use of the computer.

  • Field Trip: Come See a Play!

    What whistles, hoots, throws off sparks and moves at about 180 miles an hour? Ain’t Misbehavin’!”-- The New York Times

    Come with the English department to see Ain't Misbehavin' at Portland Center Stage on Thursday, November 12. Here's a brief description from Portland Center Stage: Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, this sassy, sultry revue celebrates the remarkable life and talents of a legendary jazz great, Fats Waller. The delightful humor and infectious energy of this exuberant jazz revue takes us from the Harlem Renaissance through World War II; Waller’s work shows a determination to grasp life’s joys, laughter and passion, even in a community shadowed by the pain of a complex American society. With permission from the authors, PCS is creating an expanded-cast version of the original production."

    The play is recommended for ages 12+. Tickets are $15 (a bargain!). If you would like to attend, but can't afford the ticket, please talk to me.

    We will be taking the MAX downtown to Portland Center Stage. Expect to leave MEWA around 10:15 am and return around4 pm
