MEWA Principal's Announcements

The Metro East Web Academy provides a technology-rich 21st century learning model that ensures student success in a rapidly evolving learning, work, and community environment.

Congratulations Isabelle for completing your diploma program!
We want to celebrate one of our students who demonstrated tremendous growth on the MAPS tests this year.  This student's MAPS tests demonstrate a growth of as much as 21 points in her learning between Fall 2014 and Spring 2015.

This is what MAPS is all about:  measuring, celebrating and honoring the tremendous learning that we know happens here at MEWA, everyday.  Thank you for all of your hard work students!

The Importance of Participating in MAPS Testing, Purposefully:

  • Valid test scores are important so that students, families, and educators have a true measure of the student's learning.  We want to support and celebrate student learning, and we want to give purpose and value to our existence as a school.
  • As we develop a supportive culture around testing, student scores will be added to their transcripts so that we can track and celebrate long term growth.
  • A decrease in student MAPS scores could unfairly indicate that MEWA is negatively affecting student learning.  Because it is important that we have an accurate representation of both the hard work students have done, and the achievements students have made during the year, growth scores of -5 or lower will be reassessed.  Students will be required to retake those tests for valid scores.
  • We require all students to take the MAPS tests seriously so that there exists an accurate representation of their learning.

Dear parents and students:

MEWA Parents and Students -- Remember High School Graduation is June 8th at East Hill Church in Gresham, 7:00 PM!!   Remember that MEECA and GED are part of the MEWA graduation!  Graduation practice is at noon at the East Hill Church.  The 8th grade promotion ceremony is at 5:00 PM at the East Hill Church.

      • 8th Grade Promotion is June 8th at 5 pm at East Hill Church.
Parents and students, we apologize that these questions tend to be more virtual school focussed and in the future we will add questions that better relate to MEECA and GED students.  It is important to understand that MEECA and the GED program only exist as programs through MEWA, consequently, we need your help in filling out this short 8 question survey (7 questions for students).  MEECA and GED students are MEWA students.  It should take no longer than 5 to 10 minutes. This survey is a requirement from GBSD as part of our charter contract, annual charter evaluation and is necessary for our continued AdvancEd accreditation. The accreditation is what makes the MEWA diploma recognized by other institutions.  The charter from GBSD is what makes MEWA possible.  In last year's charter evaluation from the district, it was determined that we did not have enough parent and student participants in the survey, so please take a moment and complete the form. Students:
Most of you have completed the MAPS testing this week.  Thank you!  For those of you that have to complete a few more, or redo some, please Sign Up for Tuesday or Wednesday, asap.  Be sure to add your session to your calendar so that you don't forget, and remember to access the Student Directions when you begin your test!

Remember, measuring your growth is an important part of the learning culture at MEWA.  We're proud of all of your accomplishments and look forward to seeing your learning!

As parents and students are made aware of during the welcome meeting upon enrolling in our school, we require all students to participate in the MAP's assessment (For MEECA and GED students this year, we only want you taking the assessment if you participated in the fall or winter assessment - next year it will be a requirement for all MEECA, MEWA, and GED students) .  We asked that you sign an agreement stating that the student will participate.  This requirement is necessary for MEWA to demonstrate that students are learning in our school. Thank you for your participation! Below is a link to a document that reviews assessment requirements:

    Researching Motivation at MEWA!
Students are being asked to participate in a research study for Scott Barrentine (Science teacher and new student launcher). We’re studying the most effective ways to motivate students! The data will be used for Mr. Barrentine's master's thesis at Portland State University and to improve teacher practices here at MEWA.
Parents: We can only use your student's data if you sign this parental consent form. Students will not be identifiable in any way in the research study, we’re only going to use their survey and assignments-completed data. Thank you for your support! If you have any questions you can contact Mr. Barrentine at
barrentine@mewebacademy.org or by phone at (97
    1) 231-5428.
Students: All you have to do is complete 2 surveys and make sure your parents turn in the consent form! If you complete both surveys, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a $25 gift card to Best Buy, even if you don’t want to have your data used. Your first survey requires you to agree to participate - please follow this link to access the first survey.
The 2nd survey will be e-mailed directly to you around May 18th, so watch out for it because you must complete both surveys to win (even if you say 'no' to Mr. Barrentine using your data for his research study - the information will still be helpful and you can still win!).

MEWA needs help tending to our community garden plot this spring and summer! The garden needs an overhaul, so be willing to put in work and get a little dirty while you are giving back to the community. If you are interested in helping to plan and plant, contact Ms Hathaway.
        • It's time to start thinking about graduation on June 8th!  Most importantly, MEWA gives away two scholarships: We will draw one name from graduates in attendance the night of the ceremony for The Founders Scholarship of $1,000!  For students who attend our graduation practice earlier in the day of the ceremony, we will draw one name for The Keller-Sievers Scholarship Award of $500!
        •   Students of the Month for April:
        Bailey Walker - High School
        Daniel Truong -- High School
        •  Most Improved Students for April:

Student of the Month and Most Improved Students receive a certificate, t-shirt, and a prize. Come by the office for your photo op and awards!

We can now accept payments via PayPal (and Amazon Payments soon) for fees or donations.  If you would like to donate to our school, we use the money to pay for scholarships and activities such as field trips, incentives, and other extras that we provide our students and programs. As we are a 501 (c) (3), all donations are tax deductible and we will furnish you with a letter with our federal tax ID #.
